Frequently asked questions

We Can Help

  • What is Lactation Medicine?
As a licensed physician practicing Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine, Dr. Campbell is able to assist mother and babies in all the ways a lactation consultant (IBCLC) can, but more. As a medical doctor we can order labs, diagnostic imaging, prescribe medications and perform procedures when medically indicated. Dr. Campbell draws on her years of experience as a Board Certified Pediatrician, and Neonatologist. She is also the first Board Certified Lactation Medicine Physician in the state of Mississippi. Dr. Campbell understands the anatomic and physiologic abnormalities that can complicate breastfeeding.
  • Does Bloom & Grow accept insurance?
Yes. Bloom & Grow accepts most private insurances as well as Medicaid. We understand that each family's situation is unique, and therefore we can bill under the parent, the baby, or both. This flexible billing approach allows us to address the specific challenges, diagnoses, and medical management needs of both parent and baby effectively. If you have any further questions on insurance coverage or billing processes, please feel free to contact our office for more detailed information.
  • What happens during a lactation medicine clinic visit?
We provide comprehensive support for a wide range of breastfeeding challenges, addressing both the needs of the mother and baby. Our personalized medicine and treatments cover a variety of issues such as: Milk production to increase or regulate milk supply, painful feeding, infections, maternal wellbeing, breast anatomic barriers, maternal medical barriers, complex nursing scenarios, pumping challenges, infant growth, latch, ankyloglossia assessment, jaundice, and infant medical complications that affect breastfeeding.
  • Does Dr. Campbell treat tongue-tie (ankyloglossia)?
Yes, Dr. Campbell can perform lingual frenotomy (tongue-tie release) procedures when medically indicated. This decision is made after careful assessment of both the mother and baby's unique anatomy and feeding evaluation. The process includes a medical assessment, optimizing the baby's latch and feeding position, with the procedure considered only after non-invasive interventions have been explored. This ensures that the treatment is both necessary and the best option for improving feeding outcomes. Dr. Campbell follows the 2024 American of Pediatrics Clinical Guidelines publication on Identification and Management of Ankyloglossia in Breastfeeding Infants. This Clinical Report provides evidence-based guidance on how to manage feeding difficulties in dyads (parent and baby) with suspected ankyloglossia. Frenotomy procedures for lip and buccal frenulums and "posterior tongue ties" for lactation management are not offered. This is consistent with current peer-reviewed and published clinical evidence.
  • Does Bloom & Grow offer virtual consultations for patients?
A: Yes, after the initial in-person visit at Bloom & Grow, you can continue with virtual appointments for follow-up care. These consultations allow you to get the medical advice you need without the need to visit our clinic in person. However, if you are experiencing a new breastfeeding challenge, an in-person clinic visit is needed. This ensures that we can provide a thorough assessment and deliver the quality care you deserve. This approach helps us maintain a high standard of healthcare while offering flexibility to our patients.
  • Does Dr. Campbell at Bloom & Grow offer pediatric primary care services for my child?
A: At Bloom & Grow, Dr. Campbell specializes in Breastfeeding Medicine. While she maintains her board certification in both general pediatrics and neonatology-perinatal medicine, she does not provide pediatric primary care services or serve as a medical home. Instead, Dr. Campbell focuses on breastfeeding support and related care. However, she is committed to working closely with your child's primary doctor to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care for your child's health needs. If your child requires pediatric primary care, we recommend maintaining a relationship with your pediatrician for ongoing management and health services.
  • What should I do to prepare for my clinic visit?
A: Please complete your intake form prior to your visit. Dr. Campbell will review the information you shared before your visit to allow for more quality in-person care. It's particularly important to provide your baby's weights and corresponding dates, as this information is crucial in assessing their nutrition and growth. As breastfeeding medicine involves comprehensive care for both the mother and the baby, having all pertinent information beforehand ensures that both patients receive the best possible care. If you have any questions or need assistance with the intake form, please do not hesitate to contact our clinic.
  • Do I need a referral to schedule an appointment?
No referral is necessary. You can easily schedule an appointment at Bloom & Grow directly through our portal system, making the process convenient and straightforward. For most insurance providers, a referral is not necessary. However, if you have federal Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) insurance, a referral is required. In that case, we ask that your referring physician complete the referral form available on our website. This ensures a seamless experience and proper coordination of your care.
  • I have a premature baby, can Dr. Campbell help?
At Bloom & Grow, Dr. Campbell, our neonatologist, specializes in the care of premature infants, providing crucial support for families during this challenging time. Recognizing that human milk is exceptionally beneficial—indeed, it is life-saving medicine for premature babies—Dr. Campbell has a special interest in helping families provide mom's own milk for their NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) baby. Early intervention and consultation is key, so we encourage you to reach out to us as soon as possible if you have a baby in the NICU.
